What Is Vibrato?

By Livie G – Vocal & Piano Instructor

If you’ve ever listened to a singer and noticed their voice has a soft wave or shimmer when they hold a note, you’ve heard vibrato! When I think of vibrato I think of Opera music, but it is found in many genres and kinds of music. It’s that little movement that makes a voice sound warm, emotional, and alive!

Vibrato also has a cultural aspect! If you grew up listening to music that contains vibrato you are more likely to already sing with it or achieve it faster. If you grew up listening to people sing without vibrato, you will need to start listening to others sing with vibrato more to help develop it. With all of this being said It does happen naturally when your voice is free, supported, and balanced. If you are in a singing ensemble or classical choir you may have heard or been told to sing something with a straight tone. When you get into different styles of singing with others, sometimes less vibrato can create a clearer sound for harmonies.  For the most part, as a soloist, vibrato is going to be a very important tool you want to understand and learn to use.

What’s Actually Happening When You Hear Vibrato

When vibrato shows up, your body is working exactly the way it’s supposed to.
Here’s what’s going on:

  • Your breath flows evenly from your diaphragm, steady but not pushed.
  • Your vocal folds (also called cords) stay flexible and make tiny, natural adjustments in tension.
  • Your larynx (the structure in your throat that houses your vocal cords) stays stable and relaxed.

All of this creates a small, rhythmic wave in pitch, usually around 5–7 times per second, that we hear as vibrato. It’s a tiny, smooth movement that makes your sound shimmer.

Why It Happens Naturally

Your voice is a living instrument. When your breath support, vocal muscles, and posture are all in sync, your body finds its own rhythm. Vibrato is your nervous system and muscles working together in perfect balance. It’s your body’s way of saying, “I’m relaxed, steady, and ready to sing.”

Real vibrato comes from healthy support. You should always work on healthy habits, as singer, continually. If you are anything like me I procrastinated everything when it came to work. I found throughout getting my degree in Music Education, you CAN’T CRAM TECHNIQUE! It really is a process, if you want to grow as a singer, that takes discipline, structure, and patience.  When we’re tense or trying too hard, the sound locks up. But when we let go and support the breath, vibrato starts to appear all on its own.

Why Vibrato Matters

Vibrato isn’t just for classical singers; it’s everywhere. Pop, gospel, musical theater, worship music — even subtle vibrato can make a note sound warmer and more expressive.

Here’s what it does for your singing:

  • Adds emotion and depth to your tone
  • Helps you sustain notes more easily
  • Keeps your voice flexible and healthy
  • Makes your sound feel natural and connected

It’s one of those moments where technique meets feeling, and that’s what makes music powerful.

How to Start Finding Your Vibrato

If you’re new to singing or feel like your voice is “stuck” straight, here are a few simple things to focus on:

  1. Steady breath support – think of your breath as your foundation.
  2. Relax your jaw and throat – no squeezing, no shaking.
  3. Sustain one comfortable note and listen. Sometimes the natural wave will start to appear all on its own once your body’s relaxed.
  4. Listen to singers who have it!

The more consistent your breath becomes and the less tension you carry, the easier vibrato develops. It’s not something you practice into your voice; it’s something that shows up when everything else is working together.

In Summary

Vibrato is one of the most beautiful parts of singing because it represents other mechanisms of your voice working correctly.
It’s your body and voice in balance, supported, open, and expressive. When it happens naturally, you’ll feel it as much as you hear it.
